When selecting SPC flooring, thickness is often one of the first specifications buyers look at. Common SPC flooring thickness options on the market include 3.5mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm. So does a thicker board always mean better quality?
The answer is: Not necessarily.
Much like cars, a larger engine is not suitable for every driver. The same applies to SPC flooring — the ideal thickness depends on the installation environment, foot traffic and budget.
For property owners, thickness affects floor stability and transition fitting with the existing subfloor. For importers and distributors, thickness also impacts product positioning, shipping costs and customer expectations.
In this guide, we compare SPC flooring in four thicknesses: 3.5mm, 4mm, 5mm and 6mm. We explain how thickness influences performance and help property owners, wholesalers and contractors choose the right specification based on real-world project needs.
Now let’s start with the basics.
SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) is a type of vinyl composite flooring with a rigid core. Unlike traditional flexible vinyl flooring, SPC flooring features a rigid structure that delivers excellent dimensional stability and good resistance to everyday impacts.
What exactly does flooring thickness measure?
SPC flooring consists of multiple layers, each serving a distinct function:
UV Coating: Top protective layer that resists stains, scratches and daily wear.
Wear Layer: Clear protective layer to reduce abrasion on the decorative print.
Decorative Film: Printed layer that creates realistic wood grain, stone texture or other surface effects.
Rigid SPC Core: Main structural layer that provides rigidity and supports the click-lock system.
Attached Underlayment (Optional): Usually IXPE or EVA, to improve sound insulation and walking comfort.
The SPC core accounts for the majority of the flooring’s total thickness.
A point many buyers overlook: total flooring thickness is not always equal to core thickness.
For example, suppliers may offer products in these scenarios:
5mm SPC flooring (without underlayment)
5mm SPC flooring + separate 1mm IXPE underlayment, reaching an overall thickness of 6mm
Products listed as 6mm, where the stated thickness already includes attached underlayment
Even if the finished installation height appears similar, these floors may differ in core thickness.
Therefore, when placing orders, always confirm with the manufacturer whether the stated thickness includes the backing layer.
The answer is: Not necessarily.
For residential projects with limited budgets, especially low-foot-traffic areas such as bedrooms and guest rooms, well-made 3.5mm SPC flooring remains a practical option.
The slimmer profile also prevents excessive floor height build-up during renovation.
Of course, thinner specifications have limitations: less material is available for the click-lock system, so higher requirements apply to joint design and subfloor preparation.
When selecting 3.5mm SPC flooring, prioritize a reliable click-lock system, proper wear layer thickness and proper subfloor preparation, rather than price alone.
